"The carrack or Spanish coca is a type of ship built in the XVth century that was widely used as a merchant vessel. It usually had two castles, one at the bow and one at the stern, to protect the cargo from pirate attacks. From the top, which was on the long mast, sailors could easily survey the sea. This ship had a unique appearance with its mast almost as long as the hull and its round and large hold. Christopher Columbus' caravel Santa Maria is derived from this type of ship.
