The route leads from Garmisch Partenkirchen directly to the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. The line begins with the valley railway between Garmisch Partenkirchen and Grainau, from where the steep line to the Zugspitze turns into a cogwheel railway. Currently, the Tallok 1 and 4 as well as the 4-axle passenger coaches are still in use.
