It was designed not only to inflict devastating strategic damage on enemy forces, but also to spread fear and confusion through their ranks, further reducing their effectiveness as a fighting force. A Stuka dive attack used a siren deliberately attached to one of the aircraft's undercarriage legs, which emitted a fearsome wailing sound that lasted until the aircraft came out of the dive, only to be replaced by the sound of bombs exploding.
