One of the first industrialists, Franz Haniel, had Shaft 1 of the Zollverein coal mine sunk in Essen-Katernberg in 1847.
The name »Zollverein« – German Customs Union – reminds of the first customs union of the German states in 1834, which was the precursor of a united Germany.
With the putting into operation of Central Shaft 12 in 1932 that coal mine was to become the largest and most advanced deep mining site in the world with a staff of up to 6,000 workers and a daily output of 12,000 metric tons of coal.
The coal mine was shut down in 1986 and declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
