"The New Bedford whaleboat was a light, fast boat. It was double-ended so that it could change direction quickly and easily. It was planked with rot-proof cedar, which was only half an inch thick, and had a lapstrake construction. A whaleboat could be pulled by a harpooned whale for many miles and at high speed before the prey tired.
